Granada es una ciudad especialmente única, llena de historia y belleza. Recomendaría pasar al menos tres o cuatro días aquí para poder disfrutarla de verdad (reservando, por supuesto, uno de esos días para la boda). Si dispones de poco tiempo, un fin de semana largo también será suficiente para conocer muchos de sus principales atractivos.

Granada is a particularly special city, rich in history and beauty. I would recommend spending at least three to four days here to truly soak it all in (with one of those days, of course, reserved for a wedding). If you are short on time, a long weekend should still be sufficient to enjoy many of its highlights.

Lugares imprescindibles / Key Highlights

Alhambra

La Alhambra es, sin lugar a dudas, una visita imprescindible durante tu estancia. Es el monumento más emblemático de Granada, célebre por su historia, su exquisita arquitectura y su impresionante entorno.

Te recomiendo reservar las entradas (preferiblemente una visita guiada) con bastante antelación, idealmente varios meses antes del viaje, ya que suelen agotarse rápido. Si es posible, intenta conseguir una visita a primera hora de la mañana, porque más tarde puede hacer bastante calor y el recinto es muy grande.

Para los amantes de la lectura, recomiendo especialmente Cuentos de la Alhambra de Washington Irving. Este libro clásico reúne relatos breves inspirados en la estancia de Irving en la Alhambra en el siglo XIX. Combina observaciones personales con la historia local y leyendas románticas de la población musulmana y española, y se lee como un libro de viajes con el encanto mágico de Las mil y una noches. Captura la belleza de la Alhambra, la vida a su alrededor y el aura misteriosa de su pasado andalusí, convirtiéndose en un acompañante perfecto antes o después de la visita.

The Alhambra is unquestionably a must during your visit. It is Granada’s most iconic monument, celebrated for its rich history, exquisite architecture, and breathtaking setting.

I would strongly recommend booking tickets (ideally a guided tour) well in advance (ideally a few months before your trip), as they often sell out quickly. If possible, try to reserve an early-morning time slot, as it can become quite hot later in the day and the site is extensive.

For the keen readers, I highly recommend "Tales of the Alhambra" by Washington Irving. This classic book is a collection of short stories inspired by Irving’s stay in the Alhambra in the 19th century. Blending personal observations with local history and romantic legends of Moors and Spaniards, it reads like a travelogue touched with the magic of Arabian Nights. It captures the beauty of the Alhambra, the life around it, and the lingering mystique of its Moorish past, making it a wonderful companion before or after your visit.

Albaicín

El Albaicín es el antiguo barrio andalusí de Granada, conocido por sus calles estrechas y sus casas encaladas. Es el tipo de lugar donde perderse un poco forma parte del encanto. Me encanta pasear sin rumbo fijo y, aún hoy, sigo descubriendo calles y rincones en los que nunca me había fijado.

Mi forma favorita de explorar la zona (especialmente en julio) es empezar temprano con un desayuno en alguna de las cafeterías de Plaza Bib-Rambla (ver recomendaciones más abajo) y luego ir subiendo tranquilamente hasta el Mirador de San Nicolás. Es el mirador más famoso de la ciudad, y con razón. El paseo dura unos 30 minutos y, al llegar arriba, las vistas de la Alhambra con las montañas de Sierra Nevada al fondo son inmejorables.

The Albaicín is Granada’s old Moorish quarter, known for its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses. It is the kind of place where getting a little lost is part of the charm. I love wandering around without a plan and, even now, I still come across streets and corners I had never noticed before.

My favourite way to explore the area (especially in July) is to start early with breakfast at one of the cafés in Plaza Bib-Rambla (see recommendations below), and then slowly make your way up to the Mirador de San Nicolás. It is the city’s most famous viewpoint, and with good reason. The walk takes about 30 minutes and, once you reach the top, the views of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada mountains behind are unforgettable.

Después, una pausa es más que merecida. Según la hora del día, puede ser un café o una bebida bien fresquita. Recomiendo especialmente El Huerto de Juan Ranas, aunque también hay muchos otros bares y cafeterías pequeños en los alrededores donde puedes parar y disfrutar del ambiente.

Una ventaja es que puedes entrar directamente en El Huerto de Juan Ranas sin necesidad de reserva. Con un poco de suerte, normalmente se consigue mesa en unos 10 minutos y puedes tomar algo sin la presión de tener que pedir comida, algo que no siempre ocurre en otros sitios. Es un poco más caro que la media de los bares en Granada, pero pagas un pequeño extra por disfrutar de unas de las mejores vistas de la ciudad. Es una de mis cosas favoritas que hacer en Granada y algo que siempre recomiendo.

Afterwards, a pause is very well deserved. Depending on the time of day, this might be a coffee or a cold drink. I highly recommend El Huerto de Juan Ranas, although there are plenty of other small bars and cafés nearby where you can also stop and enjoy the atmosphere.

A plus is that you can just walk in to El Huerto de Juan Ranas. With a bit of luck, you can usually get a table within about 10 minutes and enjoy a drink without any pressure to order food, which is not always the case elsewhere. It is a little more expensive than the average bar in Granada, but you are paying a small premium for some of the best views in the city. It is one of my favourite things to do in Granada and something I always recommend.

La Catedral de Granada y la Capilla Real / Granada Cathedral & Royal Chapel

En el corazón de la ciudad se encuentran la Catedral renacentista de Granada y la Capilla Real, situada justo al lado, lugar de descanso final de los Reyes Católicos, Isabel y Fernando. Ambas merecen mucho la pena por su historia y su arquitectura.

El Sagrario es una capilla dentro del conjunto catedralicio que también se puede visitar; no obstante, ten en cuenta que allí se celebrará la ceremonia de la boda.

In the heart of the city, you will find the Renaissance Granada Cathedral and the adjacent Royal Chapel, the final resting place of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Both are well worth a visit for their history and architecture.

El Sagrario is a beautiful chapel within the cathedral complex, which you can visit, but note the wedding ceremony will take place there.

Hammams

Después de recorrer las colinas y las calles históricas de Granada, una visita a un hammam es la manera perfecta de bajar el ritmo y relajarse. Inspirados en el legado andalusí de la ciudad, estos baños árabes tradicionales ofrecen un refugio de paz, con piscinas de agua caliente y fría, salas de vapor y espacios iluminados con velas que crean un ambiente íntimo y relajante. Recomendaciones para Tapeo / Top Spots for Tapas

Granada es famosa por su tradición de tapas, así que puedes estar seguro de que no tendrás ninguna dificultad para encontrar un excelente jerez, jamón, pescado fresco y buen vino.

La “etiqueta” de la tapa: En muchos bares, cuando pides una bebida, te sirven gratuitamente un pequeño plato de comida (una tapa). Si después de un rato no te traen nada, es perfectamente normal preguntar con educación si las tapas están incluidas con la bebida.

Si el bar sirve tapas, lo habitual es que recibas una nueva tapa con cada nueva bebida. Ten en cuenta que, una vez empiezas a pedir platos de la carta, normalmente dejan de servir las tapas de cortesía.

Un buen plan para cenar suele ser encontrar un bar agradable, pedir una bebida, disfrutar de la tapa y, después, quizás pedir algunos platos adicionales de la carta.

A continuación, algunas sugerencias que me encantan y que están entre mis favoritas. Son solo algunas ideas; hay muchos otros sitios maravillosos por descubrir en la ciudad:

- Los Diamantes: ideal para pescaito frito. Tiene varios locales en el centro.

- El Provincias: un bar pequeño, animado y fantástico, también muy bueno para pescaito frito. Lo más probable es que comas de pie en la barra, pero el ambiente es estupendo. - La Esquinita de Javi: un sitio local y animado, con mesas y muy buen marisco.

Mención especial (para los más golosos): Granada - y también la cercana Santa Fe - es famosa por el pionono: un pequeño bizcocho enrollado, bañado en almíbar y coronado con crema tostada, creado en el siglo XIX y llamado así en honor al papa Pío IX (“Pío Nono”). Los más tradicionales se pueden encontrar en Pastelería Casa Ysla.

The tapa "etiquette": In many bars, when you order a drink, a small plate of food (a tapa) is brought to you free of charge. If nothing arrives after a little while, it is perfectly fine to politely ask whether tapas are included with drinks.

If tapas are being served, you will usually receive a new tapa with each new drink. Please note that once you start ordering food from the menu, the complimentary tapas normally stop.

A good plan for dinner is often to find a nice bar, order a drink, enjoy the tapa, and then perhaps order some additional dishes from the menu.

Below are some bars you may enjoy, which are also among my favourites. These are just a few suggestions; there are many other wonderful places to discover throughout the city:

• Los Diamantes: great for pescaito frito. There a couple of locations in the city center.

• El Provincias: a fantastic small vibrant bar with great for pescaito frito. You will likely be standing having food at a counter, but the atmosphere here is brilliant. I recommend trying the small location in the calle Provincias first. If no luck finding a place, you can just walk to the branch located in Bib Rambla just a few metres away.

An honourable mention (for those with a sweeth tooth): Granada (and nearby Santa Fe) is also famous for the Pionono – a small, syrup-soaked sponge roll topped with cream, created in the 19th century and named in honour of Pope Pius IX (“Pío Nono” in Spanish). Traditional ones can be found in Pasteleria Casa Ysla.

Restaurantes para Comer / Restaurants for a Full Meal

Si tienes una o dos noches libres en Granada, te recomendaría reservar para cenar en el restaurante del Parador de Granada. Es un hotel situado dentro del recinto de la Alhambra, pero puedes reservar mesa aunque no te alojes allí. El entorno es precioso, ya que se encuentra dentro del propio conjunto monumental.

Es uno de mis planes favoritos en verano y puede encajar perfectamente como opción para comer después de la visita a la Alhambra.

If you have one or two spare nights in Granada, I would recommend going for lunch or dinner at the restaurant at the Parador de Granada. This is a hotel located inside the Alhambra, but you can book a table even if you are not staying there. It is a lovely setting, right within the palace grounds. One of my favorite activities in summer and a possible fit for your lunchplan after visiting the Alhambra.

Otra experiencia que recomendaría es reservar una cena en un carmen. Un carmen es una casa tradicional granadina, normalmente con jardín o terraza, y a menudo con preciosas vistas a la Alhambra.
